How to Improve Your Writing is Focus of Next Excelsior College Veterans Webinar

Veterans Writing Help. For many veterans, transitioning from the military to higher education can be a difficult road to maneuver. Yet, while some obstacles to degree completion can be overcome through improved access to information (e.g. Post 9/11 Education benefits) others, such as the ability to effectively communicate thoughts and ideas through writing, require a learned skill set.

For this reason, Excelsior College will tackle the subject of writing during the next episode of its veteran webinar series “You’re Back – What’s Next” scheduled for September 18, 2013 at 7 pm EST.

Hosted by the Center for Military Education at Excelsior College, the webinar will explore the most common writing struggles for veterans returning to school and outline services available to both the general public and Excelsior students to help sharpen their skills. In particular, this webinar will address, a number of key areas including:

1. Generating topic ideas both with and without research
2. Developing a thesis and/or focus
3. Essay Organization
4. Integrating and citing source material
5. Using appropriate language and formal tone
6. Effective revising and editing habits (and knowing the difference)

The discussion will be led by Michelle Healy, learning services coordinator at Excelsior College’s Center for Online Educational Learning and Academic Services, and Dr. Crystal Sands, online writing lab project director.

“Writing is one of the most important skills you will need in college, as all online classes require writing of some kind,” said Sands. “Additionally, national research indicates that those who have strong writing skills are more likely to be hired and promoted in the workplace.”

The Excelsior experts will also outline educational writing resources freely available to the general public, including Grammarly and both the Excelsior College Online Writing Lab (OWL) and the ESL Writing Online Workshop (ESL-WOW).
