Financial Aid 101 for Adult Students

FINANCIAL AIDAccording to the National Center for Education Statistics, nearly 4 million adults ages 35 and older are currently pursuing a degree. For some students, the financial aid process can be daunting. Excelsior College’s assistant vice president of enrollment management, Thomas Dalton, and director of financial aid, Christina Roarke, will attempt to ease the process by answering questions on December 19 during a Live Chat.  To preview the Live Chat, the pair recently sat down with Excelsior Life to answer a few FAQs.

Excelsior Life: Do you offer financial aid? Dalton & Roarke: Yes, there are several different types of aid available at Excelsior College. Students may qualify for federal grants, state grants, federal loans, institutional scholarships, endowed scholarships and private loans. Excelsior College is the pioneer in offering federal aid for a completely online education. NOTE: Certificate programs and currently exams do not qualify for financial aid.

Excelsior Life: Can you explain financial aid terminology and FASFA?  Dalton & Roarke: Within financial aid there is a lot of terminology that may seem confusing. For example FASFA, stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid. This is the form that students complete and submit electronically to the Department of Education. On the form, you are asked to indicate an OPEID, a School Code. This tells the Department of Education what schools you want your information sent to. For example, Excelsior Colleges School Code is 014251.

Excelsior Life: How do I apply for federal financial aid? Dalton & Roarke: The best place to start is filing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid.  Also review the Excelsior College online financial aid information by visiting financial aid.

Excelsior Life: Where do you suggest adult’s research information on scholarships, grants and college funding information?  Dalton & Roarke: There is a library of video questions answered and organized by category. Visit financial aid tv.

Excelsior Life:  Where can you find employer or military financial aid assistance informationDalton & Roarke: The GI Bill website is a wonderful resource for military financial aid assistance. Excelsior College also has information available on our website at Military or Veterans.
