Excelsior College Inducted into Upsilon Pi Epsilon, Sigma Beta Delta Honor Societies

Excelsior College today announced its induction into two distinguished honor societies, Upsilon Pi Epsilon (UPE), the International Honor Society for the Computing and Information Disciplines, and Sigma Beta Delta, the International Honor Society for Business, Management and Administration.

“It is quite an honor to be among the few distance education institutions in the nation to house a chapter of UPE,” said Sherly Abraham, PhD, faculty program director for IT and cybersecurity in Excelsior’s School of Business and Technology. “This is a tremendous honor and a validation of the quality of our program offerings. We look forward to helping recognize and develop the next generation of leaders in the computing science field.”

First organized at Texas A&M University, College Station, in 1967, UPE now hosts chartered chapters at colleges and universities across the globe. The honor society’s mission is to recognize academic excellence at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in the Computing and Information Disciplines and is endorsed by the two largest computer organizations in the world, the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) and the IEEE Computer Society (IEEE-CS).

Excelsior offers a number of undergraduate and graduate degrees in the computer science/cybersecurity fields, including an Associate in Applied Science in Technical Studies, Bachelor of Science in Technology, Bachelor of Science in Information Technology and Master of Science in cybersecurity.

Excelsior will host an initiation ceremony on Thursday, July 11, 2013 at the College to recognize its induction into the UPE. The name of the chapter will be The UPE Chapter of Excelsior College (Tau Chapter of New York). Dr. James Comer, associate professor and chair, Department of Computer Science, Texas Christian University, will represent the honor society at the ceremony. In total, 21 Excelsior students, and two faculty members – Sherly Abraham, PhD, program director of IT and cybersecurity, and Lifang Shih, PhD, associate dean in the School of Business and Technology – will be inducted into membership.

The mission of Sigma Beta Delta is to encourage scholarship and achievement among students of business, management, and administration, and to encourage and promote personal and professional improvement and a life distinguished by honorable service to humankind.

Excelsior offers a number of business programs at the associate and bachelor’s levels, including:

  • Associate in Applied Science in Administrative and Management Studies
